Does creatine cause bloating or water retention?

CHECKED 2026-10-02SOURCED

Short answer

It can in the first weeks, mostly from water held inside muscle. A 2021 expert review found short-term water retention is real, especially with high loading doses, but longer studies do not show lasting extra body water relative to muscle. Stomach upset is more likely with large single doses. Skipping the loading phase usually avoids both.

Two different things people call bloating

The first is water weight. Creatine draws water into muscle cells along with it. In the first days of a high-dose loading phase this can add a pound or two on the scale. A 2021 review of common creatine questions in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that this early retention is well documented, but that several longer studies found no increase in total body water relative to muscle mass.

The second is a bloated or upset stomach. That is a gut effect, and it is reported more often when people take a large amount at once.

Why women in midlife report it so often

In menopause communities, bloating is the most commonly mentioned downside of creatine. Part of this is timing: perimenopause already brings fluid shifts and digestive changes, so a new supplement gets the blame for any of it. Part of it is dose. Many women are now copying 10 gram and 15 gram routines from social media, well above the 3 to 5 grams most research used.

What tends to help

The review found no need for a loading phase: a steady daily amount reaches the same muscle levels in a few weeks. Splitting the amount, taking it with food and dissolving the powder fully are the usual ways people reduce stomach upset.

If swelling is new, one-sided, or comes with breathlessness, that is not a supplement side effect to wait out. See a clinician. Educational content, not medical advice.

Related questions

Does the water weight from creatine go away?

In longer studies total body water was not raised relative to muscle mass, which suggests the early bump does not keep growing. It also reverses when you stop.

Do creatine gummies cause less bloating?

There is no evidence for that, and independent testing has found some gummies contain little or no creatine. See our page on creatine gummies.
