Creatine HCl vs monohydrate: which is better?

CHECKED 2026-09-30SOURCED

Short answer

Monohydrate. It is the form used in almost all of the research, and a 2022 review by the International Society of Sports Nutrition found no evidence that HCl, ethyl ester, buffered or other forms work better. HCl is often sold on claims of better absorption and smaller doses, but those claims haven’t been shown in trials. Our creatine guide fails HCl products on form.

What the research is built on

The 2017 ISSN position stand and the 2021 review of creatine misconceptions both describe creatine monohydrate as the best-supported form. Hundreds of trials on strength, muscle and safety used it. That matters because a different form is only as good as the studies behind it, and for the alternatives there are very few.

The claims for HCl

Creatine hydrochloride is marketed as more soluble, better absorbed, easier on the stomach and effective at a smaller dose. Solubility in a glass is not the same as uptake into muscle. Kreider’s 2022 review in Nutrients went through the alternative forms and found the claims of superiority unsupported: no trial had shown HCl beating monohydrate on muscle creatine, performance or side effects.

What we do about it

On our creatine page, CON-CRĒT, the best-known HCl product, is NSF Certified for Sport, so its label is honest, but it fails our standard on form. That is a deliberate rule: we recommend the form the evidence was built on. If monohydrate upsets your stomach, the ISSN review suggests splitting the dose or taking it with food, which doesn’t need a different molecule.

Related questions

Is micronized creatine different?

No. Micronized monohydrate is the same molecule ground finer so it mixes better. The evidence for monohydrate applies to it.

Does Creapure mean better creatine?

Creapure is a branded monohydrate made in Germany with published purity testing. It is still monohydrate; the difference is traceability of the raw material, not a different form.
