Does creatine help you lose weight?

CHECKED 2026-10-07SOURCED

Short answer

No, creatine does not help you lose weight on the scale. A 2024 meta-analysis of 143 trials found it raised body weight by about 0.86 kg (just under 2 pounds) on average, alongside more lean mass. Paired with strength training, it trimmed body fat percentage slightly, about half a percentage point in adults 50 and over. It is a muscle supplement, not a weight-loss one.

What happens to the scale

The largest pooled analysis, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2024, combined 143 randomized trials. Creatine increased body weight by 0.86 kg and fat-free mass by 0.82 kg, and lowered body fat percentage by 0.28%. Effects were larger when people also did resistance training. Part of the early rise is water drawn into muscle, which our page on creatine and weight gain covers in detail.

Fat, with strength training

A 2019 meta-analysis of 19 studies and 609 adults aged 50 and over found that creatine plus resistance training lowered body fat percentage by 0.55% more than training with a placebo. The creatine groups lost about 0.5 kg more fat, but that difference was not statistically significant.

A 2023 meta-analysis of 12 studies in adults under 50 found a similar pattern: body fat percentage fell 1.19% more, with no difference in actual fat mass. A lower percentage without less fat mostly reflects more lean mass.

Training matters, and so may sex

A 2022 meta-analysis of 35 randomized trials and 1,192 people found creatine added about 1.10 kg of lean mass when combined with resistance training. Without exercise, the difference was 0.03 kg, which was not significant. Men gained 1.46 kg of lean mass on creatine, while the 0.29 kg gain in women was not statistically significant. That does not mean creatine fails in women, but the evidence for them is weaker. Our page on women over 50 covers those trials.

How to read this

None of these reviews set out to test creatine as a weight-loss treatment; they measured body composition, mostly in small trials. Several authors disclose ties to creatine makers, including advisory roles with AlzChem, a creatine manufacturer. The honest summary: creatine can help you keep or build muscle while you train, and muscle matters as you age. It will not make the number on the scale go down, and in the first weeks it may nudge it up.

Related questions

Can creatine help me keep muscle on a GLP-1 like Zepbound or Wegovy?

Nobody knows yet. A September 2026 paper in Clinical Nutrition notes that no randomized trial has tested creatine during GLP-1 weight loss. Talk to your prescriber before adding supplements.

Does creatine burn fat?

Not in a way trials can clearly measure. Across meta-analyses, the change in actual fat mass was small or not statistically significant.

Will creatine stall my weight loss?

It can make the scale tick up early, mostly from water and lean mass. That is not fat gain.
