Short answer
Zepbound hair loss is a listed side effect. In the two main weight trials, 4% to 5% of people on Zepbound reported hair loss, against 1% on placebo. The label says it was associated with weight reduction and was far more common in women: 7.1% of women versus 0.5% of men on Zepbound. No one on Zepbound stopped treatment because of it.
What the Zepbound label says
The Zepbound prescribing information, revised in August 2026, lists hair loss in 5% of people on 5 mg, 4% on 10 mg and 5% on 15 mg, against 1% on placebo, in two trials of up to 72 weeks. It states that hair loss on Zepbound was associated with weight reduction. Women reported it far more often than men: 7.1% versus 0.5% on Zepbound, and 1.3% versus 0% on placebo. No one on Zepbound and one person on placebo stopped treatment because of it. The Medication Guide lists hair loss among the most common side effects.
Why weight loss can shed hair
The American Academy of Dermatology says it is normal to shed 50 to 100 hairs a day, and that shedding much more is called telogen effluvium. It lists losing 20 pounds or more among the common triggers, and says most people notice the shedding a few months after the triggering event. As the body readjusts, the shedding stops, and hair tends to regain its normal fullness within six to nine months. If the stressor continues, shedding can last longer. The Zepbound label does not name the type of hair loss, so a doctor has to say which one you have.
What the newer research adds
A 2026 meta-analysis of nine trials, seven of them randomized, covering 4,114 GLP-1 users, found hair loss about 3.3 times as likely as on placebo, with an overall rate of 3.9%. A 2026 systematic review of 24 studies found tirzepatide was the GLP-1 drug most often linked to telogen effluvium, that women appeared to be affected more, and that rapid weight loss was a possible contributor. The authors say large prospective trials are still needed to establish cause. Neither can predict your own risk.
How it compares with Wegovy
The Wegovy label, revised in June 2026, uses the same language: hair loss associated with weight reduction. It reports 3.3% on Wegovy 2.4 mg against 1% on placebo, again more often in women, at 4% versus 0.9% in men. Our Wegovy hair loss page covers that label in more detail. On either drug, if you notice more shedding than usual, tell your prescriber. Whether to change anything is their call, and a dermatologist can tell shedding apart from other causes such as hereditary hair loss.
Related questions
Does Zepbound hair loss grow back?
The Zepbound label does not say. The American Academy of Dermatology says shedding after a trigger such as losing 20 pounds or more usually stops as the body readjusts, with fullness tending to return within six to nine months.
Why are women more affected?
The label reports the difference, 7.1% of women versus 0.5% of men on Zepbound, but does not explain it.
Did anyone stop Zepbound because of hair loss in the trials?
No one on Zepbound did. One person on placebo stopped because of hair loss.
