Short answer

Magnesium for sleep may help a little, but the evidence is weak. A 2021 review of three small trials in older adults found people fell asleep about 17 minutes faster, with low to very low quality evidence. A 2026 review of 12 trials concluded magnesium is not supported as a routine insomnia treatment. For chronic insomnia, guidelines recommend CBT-I first.

What the reviews found

A 2021 systematic review in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies pooled three randomized trials in 151 older adults. Magnesium shortened the time to fall asleep by 17.36 minutes compared with placebo. Total sleep time rose by about 16 minutes, but that was not statistically significant. All three trials were at moderate to high risk of bias.

A 2026 review in the Journal of Dietary Supplements searched through June 2026 and included 12 trials. Results were inconsistent, certainty was low to very low, and the authors concluded magnesium is not supported as a routine treatment for insomnia.

The newest trials

A 2025 trial gave 155 adults with poor sleep 250 mg of magnesium as bisglycinate or a placebo. Insomnia scores improved more on magnesium at 4 weeks, but the effect was small. The placebo group improved too, by 18 percent versus 28 percent. The capsules also delivered 1,523 mg of glycine, so magnesium alone may not explain the result.

Two trials of magnesium L-threonate, one with 80 adults and one with 100, reported gains on some sleep questionnaires. The 100-person trial found no difference on ring-measured sleep. Both were funded by companies that supply the ingredient.

Who might respond

In the 2025 trial, exploratory analyses suggested bigger improvements in people who reported eating less magnesium. The authors call this a possible subgroup of high responders and say it needs testing.

Low intake is common. ODS says many people in the United States consume less than the recommended amount of magnesium, and lists older adults and people with type 2 diabetes among the groups at higher risk of inadequacy. Food sources include leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Which form to choose is a separate question; see our page on glycinate vs citrate.

Safety notes from NIH

The upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medicines is 350 mg a day for adults, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. High doses can cause diarrhea, nausea and cramping, and the risk of toxicity rises with kidney disease.

Magnesium can interact with some osteoporosis drugs and antibiotics, and diuretics and acid-reducing proton pump inhibitors can change your magnesium status. If you take any of these, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. If poor sleep lasts for months, that is a reason to see a clinician rather than add supplements.

Related questions

Is magnesium better than CBT-I for insomnia?

No trial shows that. The American College of Physicians recommends CBT-I as the first treatment for chronic insomnia in all adults.

Which form of magnesium is best for sleep?

Nobody knows. Each trial described here tested one form against a placebo, and we found none comparing forms for sleep.

Does magnesium improve deep sleep?

One industry-funded 2024 trial reported that, using a consumer ring. A larger 2026 trial of the same form found no difference in ring-measured sleep.
